I was on LA Eastside and saw a picture of your grandfather and immediately recongnized him as my godfather. I was unable to leave a message because it says “invalid” under anti-spam word. I then clicked on your link and saw my madrina Jessie whom I loved very much and was saddened to hear she had passed away. My parents and I would visit her every Christmas, she was a wonderful person.
Wow, that’s pretty sexy. Is it ok to call your nana sexy?

Haha Browne, no it isn’t. 🙂 I literally heard the room gasp when this photo was shown during my grandmother’s wake.
Leticia, I remember your family fondly! Thank you so much for getting in touch. We all miss my beautiful grandmother terribly! I have written to you offline with more personal details.

Oh Browne! I meant it IS okay! My grandmother would have loved to hear someone call her sexy – she had a touch of vanity. Ok, more than a touch!
i love this photo…it reminds me of a few different things. The contrast, darkness, color tone, gives a nod towards the sensual of Man ray, and the noir elements of Los Angeles. But the composition gives fancy to a imaginary narration of a seductive women landing, fainting like Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz on some disheveled landscape: waiting to be awaken.

Thank you, beautifully said Karen!

This is truly an amazing picture. Is this thegrandmother at whose house we once went to a party? In any case, a truly beautiful woman… the picture reminds of some of the best of surrealist photos.

I just looked back at the 2008 blog entry about her passing and realized that indeed we went once (at least) to a truly marvelous party at her house. And I appreciated also readingthe story (that,of course,I heard from you) of her hospitality to Chumbawamba… I must say that her granddaughter seems to have inherited all of her best traits:humor, hospitality, beauty… (and no, chimatli, I’m not trying to butter you up…)
I am not completely sure which party (or more likely parties). I somehow feel like one of them may have been a birthday party for M. I also distinctly remember your mother and her boyfriend being at the party… But I am sure that could apply to many. In any case, the food was great, there was good music to dance to and everyone was friendly and having a good time. It was in a back yard that was ideal for such a party. It would have been in the late 1990s. I wish my memory was clearer, but I have partied so many times with you and E. that while I can get an image of places and spaces, aside from Halloween parties, I have trouble with occasions and dates. I blame that on the booze.

Really cool photo. And I agree, it’s sexy.
Thanks Cindy! 🙂
Apio, thanks so much for the your very kind comments, they are appreciated! Which party did you attend? I’m sure you have been to more than one…
This is another favorite pic of my grandmother taken in Tijuana:
