Maria Bethânia – A Tua Presença Morena

I’m back! It’s been a while since I last wrote about my favorite music, and today I want to share an old favorite. A Tua Presença Morena is an enchanting Brazilian piece that has completely captured my heart and earned a permanent spot among my all-time favorite songs. I first heard this rhythmic masterpiece on vinyl, and as far as I know, that’s still the only format it exists in. Thankfully, generous souls have uploaded it to YouTube, which means I can enjoy it without pulling out the record and switching all the settings on my stereo every time.

The surdo rhythm in this song is subtle yet steady, always present, quietly guiding the listener. Maria’s phrasing adds another rhythmic layer that plays off the surdo beautifully. Together, they create an interplay of contrasting rhythms that’s mesmerizing. The groove pulls you in and makes you sway without even realizing it.
