It was on Anzaldúa, so tejano music and "Mexico-Americano" fit in perfectly with the presentation. I was happy to find Chulas fronteras on YouTube because my presentation was in front of an English-speaking majority, and the subtitles saved me from having to translate the song and have my words take away from the song.

Thanks Soledad for the comment! I know what you mean about wanting to visit South Texas, it was my initial reaction too! I get these wild cravings for the Southwest, my maternal grandmother's family is from Sonora, Arizona and New Mexico and even though I've just become acquainted with those areas, I feel when I go there it's almost like home.
I forgot to mention in the post that the video is from the 70s. The film has that added nostalgic factor for me because I have good memories of being a kid in the 70s and all the music I was exposed to during my youth.
I'd love to hear more about your presentation one of these days!

Chulas fronterasis my favorite film and a very strong one, too. Even though it's short, in that one hour it shows the many differences in Tejano/Chicano at the time, with Los Alegres de Terán representing the older style, Flaco is a newer style that remains traditional but was also accepted by Anglos in Tejas, Diddy Fuentes signing corridos in both Spanish and English, and Little Joe's complex, R&B/rock influenced arrangements. I used the movie (specifically, the last song, "Mexico-Americano") in a presentation and my professor loved that I had used the film. After watching Chulas fronteras, I now want to spend the next summer in South Texas or out in Kansas, doing the same thing Alan Lomax and Les Blank did.
